Statement
Looking at a geologic timeline of planet earth, I am always struck by Nabakov’s quote, “our
existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness.” Astronomical
conditions coalesced in a way that was just so to allow for the emergence of bacteria and
algae to appear on our freshly formed planet 4 billion years ago. In the coming 5 billion
years, our sun is slated to morph into a red giant and begin the process of star death. We
are situated centrally in this fathomless story of deep time, and we haven’t been around as
ourselves (genetically) for very long at all - about 4 seconds out of a 24 hour day since the
birth of the universe.
The ancestral algae that birthed us evolved continuously, and now a modern homo sapien
has the consciousness to ruminate on these thoughts while drinking a cup of coffee in an
airplane. The many stages involved in the steady progression of evolution have occurred in due time, and yet our sense of nature’s timing has seemingly diminished in the collective modern psyche. My practice is based on a stubborn desire to always remember this “brief crack of light” by aiming to weave the concept of earth’s poetic timing throughout my work.
